After a moment, he took down the hand Lan WangJi held against his cheek, pressed a soft kiss to the center of his palm, the tips of his fingers, then directed those slender digits to his own wrist. Wei WuXian looked into his eyes for a moment, like he was looking for answers. Softly, lower than a whisper, he replied, “Losing you.” At times it felt unreal that he was holding his love so close, in his arms, in the quiet of the night, in the bright light of the day, that everywhere he turned would be filled with Wei Ying’s presence and it felt like a dream. He twirled a strand of Wei Ying’s hair around his index finger, gently releasing it and admiring how it fell and framed Wei Ying’s face, softening it a bit more in the moonlight’s glow. Lan WangJi leaned back a little so he could look at him, really look at him. When they broke apart for air, Wei WuXian pressed his forehead to Lan WangJi’s and repeated quietly, “Lan Zhan. Without warning, he yanked him in and crushed their lips together, as though he could draw out all the uncertainty just like that. Seeing doubt and fear lurking in the depths of Lan Zhan’s lovely eyes. Though he asked in jest, this was one thing Wei WuXian did not like. “You will cultivate to Immortality, and I'm sticking with you for eternity. He wound his arms around Lan WangJi, playfully tugging at his forehead ribbon. “Dual cultivation every single day does have its merits.” Jokes apart, they did cultivate together. You do take care of me everyday,” he winked. “Lan Zhan, my love, you are not supposed to cut it.” “Alright so… what do we do now? If you are being superstitious, then you really should have it.” The next few words were cut off by Wei Wuxian’s lips. “Since I wished upon a star…and you came back to me.” “HanGuang Jun, since when are you superstitious…” He had just warmed it up with a talisman. You don't want to waste food, it's against the rules.” Wei WuXian snickered as he pushed the bowl towards him. Lan WangJi warily regarded the chopsticks, the bowl, then Wei WuXian. He put it back down after a moment and looked at Lan WangJi, holding out chopsticks for him.
He decided to fix it, and took the bowl in his hands. Wei WuXian thought about it, and had some idea why Lan Zhan didn’t want it.
Lan WangJi sighed, looking at the bowl again. He leaned over to pick a few flowers out of the crown, trying a different look for Lan Zhan, and tucked a peony behind Lan Zhan’s ear as an afterthought. “Nothing.” He pushed the bowl away from him, just a little bit. “Wei Ying.” He looked up from the offensive dish. “Lan Zhan.” He called softly, absently thinking, angry Lan Zhan was cute too… Why was Lan Zhan looking at it like it held, well, snakes or something unpleasant? Wei WuXian watched him regard the unassuming porcelain bowl as if it offended him that lot. But there was one thing on his desk that he had not touched and he did not want to. Wei Ying had been next to him all day, holding his hand, watching indulgently as people handed him little gifts and wished him well.
This was without counting the little charm Wei Ying had carved him out of sandalwood, that now hung at his waist next to his Gusu Lan jade token, or the song he wrote and played for him in the morning, or the million kisses he had woken up to at first light. A crown of pretty, fragrant flowers lovingly placed on his hair instead of his guan at the end of the day by Wei Ying. From Sizhui, a drawing of the two of them visiting the bunnies when Sizhui was little. Little keepsakes from nighthunts from the juniors, the ones he accompanied them on. A beautiful jade pendant with a red tassel from Shufu, a book of poetry he had been looking for from Xiongzhang. None too expensive, in keeping with Gusu Lan rules, but all of them heartfelt. But no one would listen, and he had a small pile of gifts now. There was nothing more he could ask for or want. Lan WangJi had spent the entire day surrounded by loved ones, with Wei Ying beside him every single moment of the day. Until midnight, it would be Lan Zhan’s birthday and Wei Ying would celebrate it no matter what Lan Zhan said.
